Turning two into eight for Pickleball

Redcliffe Tennis Centre, which is run by Focus Tennis, is hoping to convert two of its 12 tennis courts into Pickleball courts to cater for one of the fastest-growing sports in the state.

Director Chris Novic said the Oxley Road centre had applied for a grant from Moreton Bay Regional Council for funding to resurface and mark out the courts.

If successful, the two tennis courts nearest Oxley Ave will be converted into eight Pickleball courts – four on each.

They would be the first purpose-built Pickleball courts in this region. The nearest are currently at Beenleigh.

Redcliffe Tennis Centre’s move is to cater for the growing popularity of the sport.

Pickleball, which is a cross between tennis, badminton and table tennis, using bats and a plastic ball.

It is played on a badminton-size court, often adapted on a normal tennis court.

More than 12,000 players are registered with Pickleball Queensland which says the sport has gone “berserk” in this state.
