Work has officially started in the Moreton Bay region on one of Queensland’s largest First Nations social housing projects.
The first sod has been turned at Deception Bay on a development by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (ATISCHS) Brisbane and the Department of Housing and Public Works.
It will provide 53 one-bedroom and 22 two-bedroom units for First Nations people aged over 55 years in two buildings on the 8000sqm block.
The development, at 643-651 Deception Bay Rd, will also have outdoor spaces and communal areas for residents to foster a sense of belonging and community.
ATISCHS anticipates construction to be complete by mid-2026.
“This project represents a significant step forward in our mission to provide essential services and support to our First Nations Elders,” ATISCHS Brisbane CEO Renee Blackman said.
“We are excited to partner with the Department of Housing and Public Works to make this vision a reality.
“In the face of Australia's current housing situation, projects like this are vital. They demonstrate our dedication to ensuring everyone, particularly our First Nations Elders, has access to affordable and secure housing.”

Minister for Housing and Public Works Sam O’Connor said First Nations people in Queensland are six times more likely to experience homelessness than the state average.
“The new Crisafulli Government is focussed on practical solutions to ensure more Queenslanders have a place to call home,” he said.
“We’re proud to partner with ATSICHS Brisbane to deliver safe, stable housing that supports better outcomes for First Nations peoples."
ATSICHS is a not-for-profit community-owned health care and human services organisation.
