A Lawnton service station was the cheapest fuel stop in South-East Queensland (SEQ) for the last quarter, according to a new report.

RACQ’s September quarter Fuel Price Report says Liberty Oil Lawnton, on Gympie Rd, had the lowest average price of 182.3cpl for regular unleaded (ULP).

That beat Pacific Petroleum Churchill 183.2cpl, Hope Energy Ashmore 183.8, Metro Southport 183.9 and Metro Sandgate 184.0 in the SEQ top five.

In the City of Moreton Bay LGA (Local Government Area), Puma Strathpine was second with an average price of 185.7cpl between July and September.

Sharing third were 7-Eleven Strathpine (northbound) and 7-Eleven Strathpine (southbound) on 186.7cpl with Metro Clontarf fifth on an average price of 188.0.

RACQ’s Fuel Price Report says Metro Sandgate 184.0cpl was the cheapest in Brisbane and Sommer Petroleum Maleny, lowest on the Sunshine Coast at 185.6.

Moreton Bay's most expensive fuel in the last quarter was BP Connect Caboolture (northbound) 206.8cpl, followed by BP Connect Caboolture (southbound) 206.7, 7-11 Burpengary East 206.7, BP Woody Point 206.1 and BP Connect Narangba 205.9.

Across SEQ, BP Tugan was most expensive, says the RACQ report, averaging 216.4cpl, with BP Milton second 212.5 and Ampol Foodary Yarrabilba third 210.2.

Coles Exp Glasshouse (southbound) was most expensive on the Sunshine Coast averaging 205.6cpl, with Coles Exp Glasshouse (northbound) second on 205.5.

“Between July and September, the average price for ULP in Brisbane was 198.2cpl, on the Gold Coast195cpl and 198.3cpl in the Moreton Bay region,” RACQ’s Principal Economic and Affordability Specialist Dr Ian Jeffreys said.

“The cheapest sites were charging up to 16cpl less on average and we want to congratulate these fuel stations for offering motorists a good deal despite uncontrollable global influences.

“Following OPEC’s cut to oil production in July 2023, the global oil price increased by 25 per cent in three months.

“This, with a weak Australian dollar, contributed to record high averages and an all-time high of 237.9cpl for ULP at the majority of sites.”

DR Jeffreys said the difference between the cheapest and most expensive site in South-East Queensland was an average of 30cpl.

“Over the three months, that’s a difference of $105 for an average sized car in Queensland,” Dr Jeffreys said.

“That’s why it’s important to use fuel price monitoring apps, like RACQ’s Fair Fuel Finder, to find cheaper sites and save money, but also drive local competition.”

The Gold Coast was the cheapest city in SEQ for unleaded, costing 195cpl on average, followed by the Sunshine Coast 195.7 and Ipswich 196.4.

Brisbane was the second most expensive capital city for ULP and most expensive of Australia’s five largest capitals for diesel in the September quarter.
