About Bongaree
Located on the western side of Bribie Island, adjacent to the Pumicestone Passage, Bongaree is surrounded by the suburbs of Bellara, Sandstone Point and Woorim.
This bayside suburb is a picturesque destination for locals and visitors alike. Bongaree Beach is popular with families thanks to the gentle waters and shallow areas its ideal for parents with toddlers looking for a day at the beach. The waterfront hosts a number of picnic shelters perfect for picnics and BBQs to complement your day at the beach.
The Bongaree Jetty offers ideal fishing conditions, the water deepens to about 7.5m and is the main thoroughfare for a huge variety of fish. At any time you could encounter mulloway, juvenile snapper, bream, flathead, cod, parrot and Moses perch, to name a few.
Key local amenities include the Bribie Island Seaside Museum, Bribie Island Library, Bribie Island State School and Bribie Island State High School.

History
The first European to reach Bribie Island was Matthew Flinders in 1799. There is evidence that Bongaree was named after Matthew Flinders’ Aboriginal companion, Bungaree.
The SS Koopa started Island tourist trips in 1911, and by the 1920's thousands came to Bribie Island to camp and fish.
