About Camp Mountain
A rural locality in the Moreton Bay Region, Camp Mountain has attracted residents since the 1980s to the suburb for the Rural/residential acreages. Located near Samford, Camp Mountain is 20km north-west of the Brisbane central business district and parts of the suburb fall into the Brisbane Forest Park, a look-out and recreation area accessible off Mount Nebo Road.
Discover the lesser known look-out spot at Camp Mountain Lookout. This park is well shaded, includes outdoor picnic tables, wood-fired BBQs and stunning views of Samford Valley and the city. The more adventurous can explore the multi-use fire trails leading off from the picnic area.
History of Camp Mountain
It’s thought the name Camp Mountain possibly arose from a mountain camp for gold mining along Cedar Creek in the 1860s. The district was taken up for farming towards the end of the nineteenth century, with a mix of dairy and fruit growers.
Camp Mountain Railway station opened in 1918. In 1947, Queensland’s worst railway accident occurred in Camp Mountain, killing 16 people.
The heritage listed Selector’s Hut also known as Mark’s hut, is located at 20 Upper Camp Mountain Road. It was built in 1870 by George Atthow, during the early stages of land division into allotments in the Samford Valley. The Selector’s Hut is a small single roomed cottage, it is constructed of slab and sawn timber. The hut has expansive views to hills beyond particularly the D'Aguilar Range which acts as a picturesque backdrop when viewing the hut from easterly points
