Things to see and do in Clontarf

History of Clontarf

For much of history the foreshore area encompassing Pelican Park at Clontarf was a series of mudflats and a reef. With the sea so close, cars travelling along Hornibrook Esplanade were often splashed with sea salt in stormy weather. In 1971 the aftermath of cyclone Dora caused a tidal surge that severely impacted the Clontarf foreshore and a decision was made to reclaim parts of the foreshore, including the area now known as Pelican Park.
