About Southern Cross Catholic College
Southern Cross Catholic College is a unique Catholic College, providing a comprehensive education for students from Prep to Year 12. The College aims to maximise the abilities of all students by providing them with the opportunity to experience a myriad of subject and vocational choices, exciting extra-curricular activities, sporting opportunities, cultural experiences and much more. At the same time, students experience a true Catholic Christian community that provides the essential spiritual and pastoral necessities for all involved in our College.
Within this caring College community, students experience the advantage of moving smoothly through the four phases of learning (early, junior, middle and senior years) to post-compulsory education without changing schools .
The core business of Southern Cross Catholic College is learning. We aim to empower our learners to shape, change and enrich our world and give witness to the Gospel message. The College strives to provide all students with a seamless and coherent program of learning from Prep to Year 12. Such a curriculum builds on students' prior knowledge and experiences, becomes increasingly more complex and abstract, and provides authentic contexts for learning as students journey through their schooling.
The curriculum is future-focused, attentive to the needs of today's youth and their world and has been divided into four phases of learning:
Learning across the years
Early Years (Prep - Year 2)
Teachers in the Early Years phase of learning plan and implement a comprehensive classroom learning program developed from the guidelines provided in the Australian Curriculum in the learning areas of Maths, English, Science, History, Geography, The Arts, Health and Physical Education and Technologies. Teachers ensure all students are provided with multiple opportunities to demonstrate the Achievement Standards outlined within the Australian Curriculum in a range of contexts and topics. The students are also required to demonstrate learnings in Religious Education which fulfil the requirements of Brisbane Catholic Education's Religious Education Guidelines.
Junior Years (Years 3-6)
The Junior Years of schooling at Southern Cross Catholic College allow students to build on their relationships with friends, staff and students from the three campuses. Academically, the students are challenged to expand their skills and knowledge whilst staff are there to nurture individual abilities and foster educational success.
Middle Years (Years 7-9)
The Middle Years Phase of learning incorporates Years 7 to 9. A dynamic curriculum has been created to engage and challenge student perceptions, perspectives and opinions. To achieve this we utilise the ACARA National Curriculum, along with the Brisbane Catholic Education Religious Education program.
Senior Years (Years 10-12)
The College offers a wide range of general and applied subjects for students in the Senior Years to choose from. Students may choose whether to qualify for an ATAR, allowing them the opportunity to pursue tertiary studies or they may be more suited to following a Vocational Education course. SCCC offers certificate courses which encompass a work-placement option. Our objective is to be as flexible as possible in order to cater for the diverse range of student needs and set each and every student up for success. The pursuit of excellence is encouraged in all areas of endeavour.
