Construction is officially underway on the new $19.5 million Suttons Beach Pavilion at Redcliffe.
Today’s sod-turning ceremony marks the start of work on a new pavilion, landscaping, public changing rooms and shade structures.
There will also be accessible toilets, accessible showers, a Changing Places facility, rooftop space and public viewing deck with ocean views.
New indoor and outdoor food and beverage options will be available when the site opens, subject to a separate tender process.
Elements of the former pavilion are being retained, with the 1998 rotunda moving to provide additional shaded seating and bricks from the old structure repurposed for landscaping.
City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said it was exciting to see work underway at the site.
“It’s fantastic that construction has begun on this highly anticipated project that will return the site to an iconic destination the community can enjoy for generations to come,” he said.
“With a vibrant hospitality scene and stunning beachfront location, the new Suttons Beach Pavilion will be a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.
“We’re looking forward to this seaside precinct opening in mid-2027, weather permitting, and the flow-on benefits it will deliver for employment, economic development and tourism in City of Moreton Bay.”
The $19.5 million redevelopment is being delivered as part of the South East Queensland Liveability Fund under the SEQ City Deal. The Australian and Queensland governments are contributing a combined $12.1 million, with City of Moreton Bay contributing $7.4 million.
Federal Member for Petrie Emma Comer said the sod-turn was a significant moment for the community.
“We’re seeing real progress on a project that will transform Suttons Beach into a welcoming waterfront destination,” she said.
Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley said the revitalisation was an important milestone.
“Suttons Beach Pavilion has been an iconic site for Redcliffe locals and visitors for many decades,” she said.
“This is an important milestone, seeing the pavilion come back to life to create a modern venue for all to enjoy.”
Councillor Karl Winchester (Division 6) said locals were eager to see the project progress.
“The pavilion will be a landmark site, and I can’t wait to see people grab a coffee or enjoy a meal on our beautiful beachfront,” he said.
The new pavilion is scheduled to open in mid-2027.
