Four-year-old Corbin Boyce is a big fan of Cameron Smith, so to be the youngest player in a competition named after the golfer – and to meet him - was quite a thrill.
The youngster recently won the C Grade Junior Club Championship at Wantima Country Club, competing against children twice his age, and lined up for the Cameron Smith Junior Classic at Wantima from December 11-12.
Corbin’s dad Chris says he again took on players twice his age.
“He played extremely well and we were super proud of him. He got to meet Cameron Smith right before his tee off, and Cam watched him play for a little bit,” Chris says.
“The Cameron Smith Junior Classic hosted over 200 Junior golfers, and was spearheaded by the Junior Coordinator Ken McKay, who is absolutely fantastic with what he does for the kids.”
Corbin is well known at the club, following his dad onto the course.
“I put a golf club in his hands when he was nine months old and he just started hitting balls. Then he was hooked,” Chris says.
“He plays with his older brother Colby and his baby brother Coda in our yard, but also just with me at our golf course. I bought a golf buggy so I could take them out more for practice.”
Chris says he tries to take the boys down to the golf course, after work, once a week and also on Saturdays after he’s had a hit.
So, what’s Corbin’s biggest strength on the course?
“Probably chasing ducks… then hitting his driver. He loves smashing his driver, he can hit it about 80m,” Chris says.
The Narangba youngster, who still has a year of kindergarten before starting school, is aiming to be better than his dad.
“He isn’t far off. Corbin has now won a club championship before me. I have been playing for 10 years and have never won one. The guys at the golf club think this is hilarious,” Chris says.
