Queensland’s Chief Health Officer has implored people to get tested for COVID-19 as the latest outbreak escalates.
The state recorded 15 new cases overnight, 13 of which were contracted in the community, as 21,806 people were tested for the virus.
It’s plunged the state into an extended lockdown until Sunday at 4pm and Dr Jeannette Young says the only way to get on top of the outbreak is to ensure people are tested if they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild.
“To get through it by 4pm Sunday I need every single person in Queensland to come forward and get tested if they have any symptoms,” Dr Young says.
“We know the Delta variant is truly unforgiving.
"We know that Delta can transmit within seconds."
Deputy Premier and Member for Murrumba Steven Miles says as the number of cases grows, so too does the list of possible exposure sites, meaning testing is more critical than ever to ensure infected people quarantine at home to stop the spread.
Health Minister and Member for Redcliffe Yvette D'Ath says there are 64 drive-through testing clinics across Brisbane, 33 of them across Greater Brisbane.
She urges people to have a test - even if their symptoms are mild, and says a doctor's referral is not needed at private pathology clinics.
“We know testing and staying at home will save lives,” Mrs D’Ath says.
Their plea resonated with residents, who flocked to testing sites across Greater Brisbane, including one on Deception Bay Rd at Deception Bay.
