Severe thunderstorm to bring heavy rainfall and destructive winds

UPDATE: 12.15pm

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued, with storms developing in the western parts of the state. 

The thunderstorm is expected to intensify as it moves towards the east this afternoon. 

It is likely to produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours. 

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises people should "move their car undercover or away from trees".

Residents should also secure loose outdoor items. 

Remember, if it's flooded, forget it.

EARLIER: A severe thunderstorm with destructive winds, hail and damaging rainfall is expected to hit the southeast this afternoon, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The storm could affect regions such as Bundaberg, Gympie, Moreton Bay, the Lockyer Valley, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

A spokesperson for the Bureau of Meteorology said the storm could last well into the evening. 

“Due to current temperatures and a trough coming in from north western Queensland, we could see a potential storm this afternoon due to unstable air mass," the spokesperson said. 

"If a storm does form on the radar, it has the potential to last well into the evening. 

“We could see destructive winds, dangerous hail and heavy rainfall, which could lead to some localised flooding because some creeks and catchments are already so saturated from the recent rain.”

Outlook for next week

Currently, Moreton Bay's temperature is sitting at 28.4C.

Monday will see a top of 26C with the possibility of a thunderstorm.

There will be a short reprieve on Tuesday with overcast conditions and a top of 27C before more showers are predicted from Wednesday through to Saturday.
