Dolphins fans have the chance to watch two blockbuster games this Saturday with the Hostplus Cup and NRL sides both playing at Suncorp Stadium.
The Redcliffe Dolphins will take on Mackay Cutters in their Round 10 clash (5pm kick-off) before the NRL side plays the Melbourne Storm in their Indigenous Round (12) game (7.35pm kick-off).
The Hostplus team is coming off a 30-20 win over Central Queensland Capras in Round 9 at Rockhampton.
There were tries to Redcliffe’s Albert Kelly (2), Robert Jennings, Cameron Cullen, Brayden McGrady and Trai Fuller, and six goals to Cody Hunter.
The Dolphins are seventh on the ladder (four wins, two draws and two loses), while the Cutters are at the bottom with no wins so far this season.
Hostplus Cup Coach Ben Te’o says he’s happy how his team has performed during the past three weeks.
“I think we’ve played pretty well, together as a team. We had some guys come to us early this year and we’ve really started to gel as a team,” he says.
Last week, marked the return of former captain Cameron Cullen after he called time on his career at the end of last season. He played as five-eighth and scored a try in the 20th minute.
“He had some time out (of rugby league). He wanted to assess things and work on outside commitments with work and family. When he was ready to come back, he did,” Te’o explains.
Cullen will back up this week in a line-up which also features NRL players Valynce Te Whare, Robert Jennings and Poasa Faamausili.
There’s also a big contingent of rising stars including Jack Bostock, Mason Teague, Max Plath, Harrison Graham and Albert Kelly … to name just a few.
“It’s a new event – going to Suncorp Stadium. I think the guys are pretty excited to play a curtain-raiser to the NRL game,” Te’o says.
He’s expecting the Cutters to also be pumped to play on the big stage and says the game is a chance to see future Dolphins stars in action.
“It’s an opportunity for fans to get in at 5pm and get two games for one and support the Redcliffe Dolphins,” Te’o says.
