North Lakes and Mango Hill will get a new fire station, covering both suburbs, under a pledge by the Queensland Labor party ahead of next week’s State Election.
The announcement comes after a long campaign by Mango Hill Progress Association (MHPA). Fire chiefs have also been calling for a new fire and rescue service.
The nearest fire stations to North Lakes and Mango Hill are currently at Deception Bay, Petrie, Kippa-Ring and Burpengary.
Proud moment
State Labor candidate for Bancroft Chris Whiting told this week’s MHPA meeting: “You should be really proud. This would not have happened without the progress association.”
Phil Carlson, the state LNP candidate for Bancroft, says he too will be “fighting for a fire station, if I am elected. It needs to happen”.
The location is to be decided but Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford says: “We will acquire land to expand fire and rescue services in this high growth region
Service support
“We’ve listened to our hard-working Fire and Emergency Services members who been advocating for this expansion to bolster our emergency response.
“We’ve also talked extensively with the Mango Hill Progress Association who have been passionate about this investment and I’m proud to announce we will deliver.”
Chris Whiting added: “Our commitment to acquire land is the first major step in boosting fire and emergency services here.
“I look forward to seeing the planning process get underway so we can source the best location for the expansion of these vital services.”
Planning ahead
Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Ambulance Services and Member for Murrumba Steven Miles said it was important to be equipped for the future.
“Acquiring the land to expand these frontline services means we will meet current and future demand which is critical to supporting the local community when disaster strikes,” Mr Miles said.
“It will allow our firefighters to continue delivering the high standard of service their communities rely on and the growing Moreton Bay region can feel at ease because they know their firefighters are well resourced and ready to assist.”
