Deception Bay local Ted Bakke dreams of having his name attached to an Australian record, which is why he is attempting to claim the title for the most mobility scooter users travel in a single convoy next month.

Ted and his Harley Davidson-like scooter will attempt the record by travelling from the Deception Bay Library to the nearby PCYC on Monday, October 3, but he can’t do it alone.

To claim the title, he needs another 172 people to join him!

“I thought it would be fun to get the community together for something like this,” Ted said.

“Every time I go to the shops, I always see lots of people using mobility scooters, so I think we have the numbers.”

Ted has been chatting to people he comes across in the local community and has been handing out flyers to spread the word about his record attempt.

“I have people from all over the region get in touch with me and let me know they are interested,” Ted says.

“So many people are interested in coming along.”

To ensure he can claim the record and have all the necessary paperwork and information he needs to provide as evidence, Ted is asking those who are interested in taking part to phone him directly on 0458 955 170.

There is also a book located at the Deception Bay Library where people can register their interest.

Setting the record straight

When Moreton Daily first reached out to Ted earlier this month, Ted believed he needed 126 people to beat the record which had been set in 2010.

When Moreton Daily started researching the current record, we discovered a record had been set by residents on the Fraser Coast in 2021.

Moreton Daily sought clarification from The Australian Book of Records (TABOR), who then contacted the Fraser Coast Council.

An email sent to Moreton Daily on Wednesday, September 21 said:

“TABOR contacted Fraser Coast and they have since provided evidence to list their record application in two Australian record categories:

1) The Most Mobile Scooters in Convoy at 171 in total.

2) The Most Mobile Scooters, Mobility Wheelchairs and Push Wheelchairs in Convoy standing at 177 in total.

“Based on this evidence, TABOR can now confirm that Ted would require 172 mobility scooters to break the record his team are wanting to attempt, not the 126 mobility scooters record which changed once Fraser Coast provided full evidence in the recent future.”

Head along

The record attempt will begin at 9am on Monday, October 3 at the Deception Bay Library, located at 9 Bayview Terrace, Deception Bay.

The convoy will then travel to the Deception Bay PCYC at 100 Maine Terrace, Deception Bay.

Afterwards, there will be a barbecue and the chance for everyone to mingle and even win some prizes.
