Fun day celebrates magnificent mullets

Mullet mania is headed to the Burpengary Tavern this weekend.

The venue’s holding its first Mullet Day Event on Saturday after COVID-19 restrictions put paid to the concept in 2020.

Marketing manager Madonna Tidyman says with the business-in-the-front-party-at-the-back hairstyle gaining popularity among sporting stars and entertainers, she was keen to see how locals had embraced it.

“Mullets are for everyone these days – so many football clubs have them and there’s a lot of locals with them,” she laughs.

Mullet Day’s not just about luscious locks – there will be family entertainment, face painting, balloon art, children’s rides and a petting zoo complete with a llama sporting its version of the fabulous ’do.

Loads of entertainment

Local band the Fat Pigs will keep crowds entertained from noon-4pm, with pop-up bars featuring local brewers such as Blackflag Brewing, Ariane Vodka, Diablo and Aloha.

As well, not-for-profit community-based organisation the Jack Reed Foundation will be on site, doing haircuts and dyeing to raise money for and awareness of their 99 New Beginnings Project, which helps people restore their dignity and find pathways to make transformational changes in their lives.

Adding to the fun will be special guests Creek to Coast’s Scott Hillier and NRL legend Chris Walker.

Entry to the Mullet competition at 2pm is free, with first prize of $500, second of $300 and third of $200.

The day kicks off at 11am and the Burpengary Tavern carpark will be closed for the outdoor event.
