Funding fears for Moreton Bay projects

Around 90 projects in Moreton Bay are under threat if the Federal Government closes a key funding program, says Mayor Peter Flannery.
Projects include the Oakey Flat Rd rehabilitation at Narangba, Gordon Rd and Ferny Way Intersection Upgrade, Ferny Hills and Deception Bay Community Hall upgrade.
The Mayor’s warning comes as Queensland councils face a financial black hole if the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program ($500m national funding a year) ends on June 30.
On its website peak body the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) is now urging Treasurer Jim Chalmers to extend funding in his May budget.
“It is implausible that the Federal Government is looking to close Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program,” Mayor Peter Flannery said in the LGAQ report.
“This will have an immediate and serious impact on local Queensland communities who are crying out for vital local road and community infrastructure.
“It is not sustainable for our rapidly growing City of Moreton Bay to continue to provide everyday services, while fully funding important infrastructure projects as we grow.”
“The impact of such a successful program ending will spell disaster for local councils and their communities.”
LGAQ President Matt Burnett said small communities would lose most, if the program - used to build roads, sporting grounds and vital community facilities - ends.
“This program is investing in local infrastructure which supports good, secure jobs and community wellbeing and liveability throughout Queensland,” he said.
“Councils can’t afford to see this program funding disappear – they need a Federal Government that’s willing to support the local economies to build vital infrastructure.”
