Get free taste of GovHack
Words by Nick Crockford

A free taster event is being held in North Lakes to help and encourage entrants in one of the world’s biggest data competitions.

GovHack, run across Australia and New Zealand next month, challenges teams to make open government data more useful and engaging.

To help ‘unpack and explain’ the two-day tournament, ‘What the Hack is GovHack?’ will be at North Lakes Sports Club on Wednesday July 20 from 2-3pm.

It is designed to ‘demystify’ the main competition enabling local entrants to prepare for the international event with ease and confidence.

This taster will lead into GovHack, which runs from August 19-21 and is being hosted locally by USC Moreton Bay, in partnership with Moreton Bay Regional Council and Unitywater.

Chasing prizes

It is expected more than 100 participants will create teams to tackle GovHack looking for new ideas or ways to reuse open data and win international, national and local prizes.

Over 46 hours teams will have to create a proof of concept and video showing how the wealth of open data, available to us every day, can be better used.

GovHack has become the biggest open data hackathon in the southern hemisphere and one of the largest in the world.

What the Hack is GovHack? is being held immediately before Innovate Moreton Bay Monthly Social Catch-up at North Lakes Sports Club on July 20.

Registration for the free taster event is required. Click here.
