Here we GO for new green bins

Collections will start on Monday December 2 for City of Moreton Bay’s lime green-lid GO (garden organics) bins.

A new fleet of GO collection trucks is preparing to hit the streets for Council’s new environmental initiative.

"City of Moreton Bay has introduced this service to help divert an additional 15,000 tonnes of waste from landfill each year,” Mayor Peter Flannery said.

“This is a program that’s proven successful in Australia and internationally and we’re thrilled to bring it here.

“With an overwhelmingly positive uptake and minimal opt-outs, our community is showing their commitment to a sustainable future.

"We’re grateful to our residents for embracing this initiative.

“It’s one small action we can all take to make a big difference to our environment."

Residents are being urged to start filling their bins with acceptable garden organic material, including:

• Leaves
• Grass clippings
• Weeds
• Plants and flowers
• Tree, shrub, or plant branches (cut to fit in the bin)

Plastics, plant trays, household rubbish, soil, gravel or food waste are not accepted.

Contaminated loads cannot be processed into compost, adding unnecessary costs and effort to manage unwanted items.

Once collected, the garden organic waste will be transformed into rich, usable compost.

This process reduces landfill waste and greenhouse emissions and contributes to growing food and improving soil health.

GO bins will be emptied fortnightly on the same day as the general waste bin, on the alternate week to recycling collections.

Bins have been delivered to properties with a land area between 300–2000 square metres. Properties outside this range can opt-in from March 1, 2025.

The GO bins initiative is supported by the Queensland Government’s Recycling and Jobs Fund.
