RSPCA Queensland and Get Ready Queensland are urging pet owners to take steps to protect their furry friends during stormy and hot weather.

With summer here and Christmas prompting a spike in pet ownership, Queenslanders are being reminded about the risks that disaster events and severe heat pose to animals.

Pet owners are encouraged to visit getready.qld.gov.au/plan and download the RSPCA/Get Ready Queensland Pet Severe Weather Emergency Plan.

On the website they’ll also find information and tips about preparing for disasters.

The Pet Severe Weather Emergency Plan steps you through everything you need to think about for your pet ahead of a significant weather event.

This includes capturing important information about your pet’s identity, preferences, behaviour, diet and medical requirements, evacuation plans, and what’s needed for their emergency kit.

RSPCA Queensland spokeswoman Emma Lagoon says: “Extreme weather impacts everyone, including all creatures great and small, and through this partnership we want to see more pet owners prepared and pets kept safe.

"Unfortunately, many people are unsure what to do with their pets in times of disaster. The work we’re doing with Get Ready Queensland is looking to change that for the better.

"Having an emergency plan that includes your animals is still quite new to most pet owners we've spoken to, but our Pet Severe Weather Emergency Plan makes it easier for people to take action.

"Put a plan in place early so you don't get caught out and speak with friends and family to have a back-up plan if you need to get your animals to safety."

Queensland Reconstruction Authority CEO Jake Ellwood says residents need to who everything they can to prepare for extreme weather.

“The devastating events experienced across Queensland last summer reminded us how quickly things can turn for the worse and why we need to Get Ready for the unexpected, and that includes keeping our pets safe.

“By understanding your risk, having an emergency plan and packing an emergency kit, you can ensure your entire family is safe, including your animals, when severe weather arrives.”
