Jason McGregor is keen to get back to competitive racing

Jason McGregor is relishing the chance to hit the track competitively for Jetty2Jetty on October 4.

Like many other athletes, his competitions have been sidelined by COVID-19 and he says competing in the half-marathon at Jetty2Jetty will be his first event for the year.

With 20 years of experience competing in fun runs throughout Queensland, the wheelchair athlete says he’s missed being part of the action.

Spinal cord injury

Using a wheelchair for the past 20 years, Jason says he was working in the mines in Western Australia when he had a car accident and ended up with a spinal cord injury.

“When we moved back to Queensland in 1997, I caught up with an old mate who’d been my karate instructor and he took me to Sporting Wheelies,” Jason recalls.

“I couldn’t have picked a more challenging sport.

“But it sort of suits my personality, because I like to push, and push hard.”

Stationary marathon

Jason’s participation in Jetty2Jetty follows a stationary full marathon last weekend, to raise money for the Flagstone Community Centre and awareness of the company he works for, the Paraplegic Benefit Fund (PBF), which provides spinal cord injury protection to members.

He completed the marathon with his chair on rollers, outside a local supermarket.

Jason says he’s looking forward to taking part in Jetty2Jetty for the first time.

“Normally when Jetty2Jetty’s on there’s other races,” he says.
