Join in Bribie’s Winter BioBlitz

Do your bit to preserve nature on Bribie Island by helping record the plants, animals and insects that call it home on July 9 during Bribie’s Winter BioBlitz.
The event, organised by the Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association, will be a first for the island.
Co-ordinator Jayda Bruce is hoping residents of all ages will get involved, simply by exploring and recording what’s in their own backyards or further afield.
They just need to download the free inaturalist app, take a photo or record a sound and upload it.
These sightings, if confirmed by two or more people, will then be added to the national species database, known as the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA).
It is overseen by the CSIRO and is a resource for anyone who needs to know what lives where.
The day aims to mobilise ‘citizen scientists’.
“There’s not much known about the biodiversity on Bribie Island at the moment. There hasn’t been too much research conducted,” Jayda says.
“It’s a good way to get everyone involved and to see what’s out there.”
While the event has a serious purpose, it will also be a fun day out with a stall at Bribie Island Rotary Markets, Brennan Park, Bongaree, offering free children’s activities.
“It is a way of getting them engaged with nature,” Jayda says.
“We’re hoping people will continue to use the app and contribute to science and research. It’s the first one for Bribie. We’re hoping to run one every season, four per year.”
