Labor wins the Federal Election 2025

The Australia Labor Party has won the 2025 Federal Election, but counting continues with a large number of prepoll and postal votes yet to be counted.

Opposition Leader and Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton has conceded defeat in his seat. LNP Federal Members for Petrie – Luke Howarth, and Longman – Terry Young, are fighting to save theirs.

Going into this election, Peter Dutton’s seat of Dickson was on a wafer-thin margin of 1.7 per cent.

About 9.30pm, he conceded defeat in the 2025 Federal Election and congratulated his Labor opponent in Dickson, Ali France, on her win; saying she would be a good local member. 

He thanked the people of Dickson for the faith they had shown in him, his staff, colleagues and his family.

Mr Dutton said the highlight of his career had been his time as Defence Minister.

He accepted full responsibility for the Coalition’s election campaign and loss, acknowledging the win was a historic for the Labor Party. Mr Dutton said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese should be proud of what he has achieved.

The LNP’s Luke Howarth is fighting to retain Petrie with the ALP’s Emma Comer leading him on more than 53 per cent of the vote counted so far. Mr Howarth was at about 46.7 per cent.

In Longman, the LNP’s Terry Young (48.53 per cent) was just behind the ALP’s Rhiannyn Douglas (51.47 per cent).

Counting continues in all three seats, but the ABC predicts the Coalition will lose Dickson and Petrie.

An emotional Anthony Albanese said serving as Prime Minister was the greatest honour of his life.

“It is with a deep sense of humility and a profound sense of responsibility that the first thing that I do tonight is to say thank you to the people of Australia for the chance to continue to serve the best nation on Earth,” he said.

“Today, the Australian people have voted for Australian values – for fairness, aspiration and opportunity for all … for the strength to show courage in adversity and kindness to those in need.”
