Latest from Moreton Bay City Council by-election count
Words by Nick Crockford

Counting is underway following the by-election for Division 11 of Moreton Bay City Council.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) says the result may not be declared until after the cut-off for return of completed postal ballots on Tuesday, October 7.

Electoral Commissioner, Pat Vidgen said counting began at 6pm on Saturday in the presence of scrutineers and will continue this week as they receive more postal votes.

“As of last night, a total of 16,043 votes were counted, which is about 55 per cent of enrolled voters in Division 11,” Mr Vidgen said.

“The declaration of a successful candidate can only be made when the outcome is certain.

“While voters needed to complete their ballot papers by 6pm on Saturday, we are still receiving votes through the mail for this full postal by-election.”

Voters who completed their vote last Saturday but forgot to post it can still mail their vote or drop it off at the Returning Office at Narangba Community Hall – Dance room, 229 Mackie Road, Narangba 4504.

Postal votes are accepted up to 10 days after election day.

“For your vote to count, we must receive it by 5pm on Tuesday October 7,” Mr Vidgen said.

“The election is currently too close to call, and I encourage all voters to return their ballot paper as soon as possible.”

The by-election follows the resignation of Councillor Darren Grimwade in July.
