Lions’ lease on CREEC café renewed

The Lions Club of Morayfield & District will continue to run the social enterprise café at the Caboolture Region Environmental Education Centre (CREEC) for up to three years.

Moreton Bay Regional Council awarded a 12-month lease, with the option for two more one-year terms, to the Lions at this week’s Council meeting.

The Morayfield Lions have held the lease of the café since a successful trial in 2018.

Councillor Tony Latter (Div 12) says the new lease is well deserved.

“It’s a great little café at CREEC.

“The Morayfield Lions are currently running the café there and the money goes to their club and their projects.

“I know it’s (the café) greatly appreciated by people who use the playground and facilities at CREEC, so I am definitely in support of them continuing.”

Council sought expressions of interest for a new lease in January and the Morayfield Lions were the only applicants.

After assessing the application against selection criteria, Council officers found Lions club has demonstrated it has the appropriate food handling skills and experience, established training programs and the resources to operate a social enterprise café.

Community support

The club has committed to using paper straws and compostable coffee cups and lids for takeaway items and ceramic plates, cups and teapots during catering events.

An officers’ report to Council says money generated by the social enterprise café supports the community by giving funding to Caboolture Community Action for back-to-school supplies for disadvantaged students and the Police Citizens Youth Club Braking the Cycle program.

Profits also enhance relationships with Caboolture PCYC’s Domestic Violence Prevention Program and deliver targeted fund-raising activities for local wildlife care groups.

CREEC is at 150 Rowley Rd, Burpengary and the café is open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 9am-noon.
