Plans to accommodate up to 26,000 residents in Morayfield South have taken a step forward, with changes to the City of Moreton Bay's planning scheme coming into effect today (November 2).
The changes include a new structure plan identifying where future roads, schools, shops, parks and community facilities could be located as one of the city's biggest growth areas develops over the coming decades.
Morayfield South is the city's second-largest greenfield growth area and has been earmarked for future housing since 2016.
Council approved the amendments on October 28, establishing a framework for development that also identifies environmental corridors intended to protect wildlife as the population grows.
The changes are part of a broader strategy to accommodate the city's expanding population, which Council projects will reach one million over the next 30 years.
City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said the structure plan was an important step in preparing for that growth.
“City of Moreton Bay is growing quickly so it’s important that we unlock new areas for housing to accommodate current and future population growth,” he said.
“The Morayfield South Structure Plan delivers a clear vision for the future of the area by mapping out environmental corridors to protect our wildlife as we grow, and new infrastructure so residents have the shops, roads, schools, parks, facilities and more to lead a happy, healthy life.”
The planning scheme amendments also update building standards for designated bushfire-prone areas across the city and include a series of administrative changes.
They follow a statutory process involving community consultation and State Government approval.
While the structure plan identifies locations for future infrastructure, the announcement does not specify when it will be delivered.
The amendments took effect on November 2. The updated planning scheme is available on Council's website, with details of the completed community consultation process on Your Say Moreton Bay.
