Ellie Smith has been officially declared the new Moreton Bay City Councillor for Division 11.
The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) made the announcement today after a postal by-election for the vacant seat.
Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said Smith received 65.67 per cent of the vote after the distribution of preferences.
Dean Clements was the closest challenger with 34.37 per cent after preferences.
Mr Vidgen said of 29,049 voters enrolled in Division 11, 21,729 returned ballot papers in time to be counted resulting in a turnout of 74.8 per cent.
Oath of Office
Mayor Peter Flannery is looking forward to welcoming Ellie Smith, who will take the oath of office on Friday, to the Council table.
“We are fortunate our Council is non-party aligned and as a diverse group of voices, we are able to work constructively together to ensure our focus is on delivering a positive and thriving future for City of Moreton Bay," the Mayor said.
“We’re committed to listening to all our residents so we can grow in a balanced way well beyond this current term of Council.
“We too are residents and genuinely want the best for our community.”
Respectful campaign
CEO of City of Moreton Bay Scott Waters said: “In congratulating Ellie as Councillor Elect, it is important to also recognise the six unsuccessful candidates for their nomination.
"The campaign was respectful, with a clear winner and I applaud the level of commitment and sacrifice all the candidates made during the By-election period.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Cr
Cath Tonks and Cr Tony Latter who have very ably shared responsibilities
relating to Division 11, following the resignation of Darren Grimwade.”
