New changerooms for Pine Rivers Swans

The Pine Rivers Swans AFL Club will score new changerooms next year, thanks to the State Government’s Works For Queensland program (W4Q) and Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Cr Mick Gillam (Div 8) says the upgrade will be a welcome addition and the government contribution would allow four changerooms to be built instead of the two that were planned.

“This is a project I’ve long been passionate about and I’m glad we are delivering upgrades to the mighty Pine Rivers Swans, with the help of (Pine Rivers MP) Nikki (Boyd ) and the State Government,” he says.

“I’ve been speaking with the club for two years now and they’re excited about the prospect of four new change rooms.”

Cr Gillam says the Swans have three women’s teams and the current facilities, built by the community in the 1970s, have not kept pace with the club’s growth.

“The girls can now have access to change facilities at the same time as a men’s team so they can grow the women’s game,” he says.

Back on the field

Mayor Peter Flannery says the $1.8 million changerooms and amenities at Rob Akers Reserve will be a major economic boost and replace the 50-year-old facilities.

“This investment literally allows for sports participation to grow tenfold at this facility,” Mayor Flannery says.

“And I think it’s the right investment at the right time, because after the COVID cancellations of club sport earlier this year we know families are just itching to get back on the field next year and get active.”

Council received $500,000 from the State Government to fast-track the project as part of the ‘Unite and Recover’ COVID-19 response.

Attracting more players

Pine Rivers MP Nikki Boyd says the W4Q program has already proven to be a major economic stimulator for the region.

“The State Government knows the value of keeping work going, especially after Christmas to ensure we start 2021 on the right foot,” she says.

“The Pine Rivers Swans are a great sports club and now they’ll be able to share the game of Aussie rules football with even more aspiring young juniors, women and even senior players.

“These upgrades will allow the Swans to not only attract new members but boost their income stream by hosting sports carnivals and events.”
