Services at the new Bribie Island Satellite Hospital have been expanded to include chemotherapy.
Up to six chemotherapy chairs will be housed in an additional medical day unit at the Bongaree facility, scheduled to open mid-2024.
Minister for Health, Mental Health, and Ambulance Services Shannon Fentiman and Member for Pumicestone Ali King, pictured above, said the decision followed community consultation.
Construction of the hospital is due to be finished by March and patients will be accepted from June. Chemotherapy services will be available from late 2024.
Bribie Island Satellite Hospital’s services will range from walk-in, non-urgent care to outpatient community-based health services with virtual healthcare capabilities.
A Minor Injury and Illness Clinic will have capacity to care for up to 490 patients a week, saving residents a trip to major hospitals in the region.
The clinic is designed to treat common, non-urgent conditions such as simple fractures, infections and allergies, sprains, strains, burns, and earache.
The satellite hospital will include 12 renal dialysis and day medical chairs, with capacity to deliver up to 132 treatments per week.
Its consult and treatment rooms will allow for appointments with Queensland Health medical, nurses and allied health professionals, including a mental health team.
There will also be a First Nations health hub as well as oral health, nephrology, geriatric assessment and intervention, and medical imaging services.
“We know how important it is to provide communities health services that are tailored to meet their needs and that that’s why we’re including up to six chemotherapy chairs in the brand-new Bribie Island Satellite Hospital,” Ms Fentiman said.
Ali King said: “Residents told us getting their chemotherapy closer to home was a top priority, so our government has worked hard to make it happen as part of our tailored services".
The Bribie facility is among seven satellite hospitals being built in south-east Queensland and with Caboolture and Kallangur, is one of three in the City of Moreton Bay.
