Calling all artists – a new mural competition has been launched in Brendale today with $8500 awaiting the winner.

Wattle Run has unveiled the Mural @ The Sheds to transform a large, corrugated iron wall at the new South Pine Road development into a visual masterpiece.

The wall is about 50sq m at the industrial urban precinct which is home to restaurant My Oh My, The Coffee Hut and Hip Hops Brewers, to open later this year.

Dr Jennifer Fisher, Director of Wattle Run, said the target was “an edgy and colourful mural that harmonises with its surroundings for our tin orb wall in the Lane Way at The Sheds”.

“This is what we’ve tried to achieve in our outdoor spaces, gardens that harmonise with the Sheds we’ve reinvented to become a destination to eat, drink, shop and celebrate.

“The gardens up against The Sheds are a feature which is why we have themed the competition – The taming of industry – Nature reclaiming industry,” she said.

Dr Fisher said the competition is open to anyone over 18 with the capabilities to produce a large mural on corrugated iron.

Wattyl Paints will supply the winning artist with exterior paint for the mural.

“From the entries, a judging panel will select four finalists with the public having the final say, via an online voting platform, on who wins,” she said.

“We really wanted to use this competition to engage with the locals giving them a say in what the precinct would look like.”

When the mural is finished, an exhibition will be held showcasing the top 25 artworks with all proceeds going back to the artists.

“We are proudly supported by Wattyl Paints who will supply the artist with all the exterior paint they need to produce their mural on our wall,” she said.

The judging panel, which will include Adelaide Artist Leah Grant and Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Cath Tonks, four mural pieces that will go out for public vote.

“It’s big, it’s bold and it’s definitely going to be a statement piece for The Sheds and North Brisbane, and we’re excited for the right creative to make the area pop!” Dr Fisher said.
