Parenting program marks 20 years in Moreton Bay

Glugor Young Parents Program celebrated its 20th anniversary with a Family Fun Day on October 23 at Deception Bay.

Held during Children’s Week, the free event included activities, a barbecue, petting zoo, community stalls and more.

The community, past and present families and staff, partners and special guests were invited. The Welcome to Country was performed by Undumbi Culture and students from Redcliffe State High School.

Since 1996, the Glugor Young Parents Program has provided holistic, accessible, responsive, flexible, targeted and individualised support to parents of all genders up to the age of 25 and their children from birth to five years of age.

Glugor is child-centred and family focused in its approach and is aligned with the Belonging, Being and Becoming – The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia (EYLF).

Its origins go back to 1996, when Glugor House was born in Kingston following a donation from the Barton family to yourtown (then Boystown) with a mission to provide families the support they need to grow in a safe and supportive environment.

In 2004, the Bartons donated funds enabling Glugor to open at Deception Bay.

Glugor is an evidenced-informed prevention and early intervention service which provides parenting and child development workshops, adjunct care on site, case management and advocacy support for young parents.

The team works hard to build safe, trusting and supportive relationships, delivering parenting programs such as Circle of Security, Tuning into Kids and more recently empowering parents to understand their rights through The Shark Cage Program.

The programs are making a difference, as one parent explained: “I was isolated and introverted before Glugor, I still have social anxiety, but I love coming for my daughter and the creative workshops. I am growing as a parent and person; I have achieved goals like completing vocational courses so maybe I could look at working”.
