Rockin' fundraiser for a mate in need

The community is rallying around a much-loved Redcliffe man who was allegedly assaulted last month by hosting a special fundraiser to help pay his medical bills.

Barry Anderson, who is well known within the AFL community, sustained serious injuries during an alleged assault last month.

Mr Anderson was walking along Marine Pde, Redcliffe, when the incident occurred.

Speaking from his home after the incident, Mr Anderson said “every day above ground is a good day”.

“It’s been a few weeks now and I am getting better every day. The swelling and bruising are almost gone,” he said.

“I had six stitches in my head but now they have been taken out, so that’s another step in the right direction.

“But I do still get really bad vertigo when I move my head. When I get out of bed the whole bedroom spins, but I am hoping that will go away in time.”

Friends step up to help

Friend Dan Nebe, who is also the director of Rockin’ 4 the Homeless, said he was horrified to hear the news of the incident and wanted to do something to help.

“I have known Barry, also known as Bazz, for many years. He’s just a top guy who always goes above and beyond for everyone else,” he said.

“He’s well known for his AFL, volunteering and helping local community groups.

“I still remember the story of him and his family giving their house to another family in desperate need when they went overseas.

“Giving your house to complete strangers is something not many people would even consider.

“Now it is our turn to do something for him when he needs it the most.”

Mr Nebe has organised “The Bazzathon” fundraiser which will be held at the Redcliffe Tigers Football Club at Rothwell from 2pm on Saturday, February 19.

“It’s the least we can do for Bazz, and we hope this fundraiser will help him with his expensive medical bills,” he said.

“I think the community has shown many times when one person is down, we are all down, so I think we will get a lot of people coming down on the day.”

Mr Nebe said he had been inundated with offers of help to make the day a success.

“The Tigers also didn’t have to think too hard to jump on board and offer the club house for their ex-President’s fundraiser,” he said.

“I have also been swamped with support from the music industry to help with this event. The arts community is always the first to put their hands up.

“We have been decimated as an industry (due to COVID), however that doesn’t stop us helping when it is needed.”

The day will feature live entertainment, including the all-female AC/DC tribute band Her Way to Hell, as well as Levi X, and Me and Jodie Lee.

There will also be children’s games throughout the day, making this a family friendly event.
