Rothwell science fan a regional champion in Breakthrough Junior Challenge

A video about time travel has earnt Rothwell’s Noah Wildman a place as a regional champion for Australia and New Zealand in the internationally renowned Breakthrough Junior Challenge.

The challenge is a global competition that asks participants aged 13-18 to explain a big scientific idea in the fields of physics, life sciences, mathematics and COVID-19 in a video of three minutes or less.

This year’s competition attracted more than 5600 entries.

Travel through time

Noah says he is fascinated by the notion of time travel and he believes one of the most likely ways to achieve it is through Wormholes.

“I would like to focus on that, even if there’s just a possibility (it could happen) Noah says.

His entry into the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, Wormholes. Tears in Spacetime, was named Regional Champion in the Popular Vote category of the competition.

Noah says while the video is only about two and a half minutes long, it took a month to create.

Self-taught graphics whiz

“I focused on the script for two weeks and then spent about two weeks on filming and animation.”

He created all the graphics for the video with some advice from a friend – no mean feat given he had little experience previously – and says being named regional champ in the Popular Vote category came as quite a shock.

“I’d done competitions before, but nothing like this – I hadn’t done any animations. It was definitely a challenge,” Noah says.

The Year 12 student at Grace Lutheran College says he loves all things science and hopes to study a Bachelor of Science at QUT next year.
