Australia’s second biggest yacht race, the Brisbane to Gladstone, enters its 75th year this Good Friday and the best waterfront vantagepoints to catch the action are in Redcliffe.

The usual Redcliffe Festival of Sails easter event won’t be held on the foreshore this year, instead the Good Friday Markets will take over the clifftops above.

Mayor Peter Flannery says that means locals will be able to snare the prime viewing position on the foreshore and encouraged them to get down early with blankets and chairs.

“Just make sure you plan to be in place before the action gets underway around 11am,” he says.

“Suttons Beach is the best spot to set up for the day on the grass or sand, if you want the feeling of being on the water then head to the Ted Smout fishing platform or Woody Point Jetty, and of course if you want to be amongst the party then head up to the cliffs for views out across the bay.

“The Redcliffe Markets are promising an Easter extravaganza including a visit from the bunny himself, an Easter Egg Hunt, live music, entertainment, prizes, raffles and goodies galore.

“The Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race is one of Australia’s most significant and largest yacht races.

“Now in its 75th year, this iconic Queensland sporting event is an Australian Easter Weekend tradition with entrants from all around the world.

“Competitors start the race just off of Sandgate and will sail north past Redcliffe, giving landlubbers the chance to enjoy the spectacle on shore.

“If you miss the Easter action on Good Friday, the Redcliffe markets will return again on Sunday for their usual trading day.”
