A fledgling swim club at The Lakes College is already making waves.
It attracted almost 100 members in its first season, and is on track to surpass that with the second season underway.
The Lakes College director of aquatics and head coach Mackenzie Speechley says club members have joined from the local area and other schools in the region.
Mr Speechley says new members are attracted by The Lakes College’s new swimming facilities, stage one of which opened in August 2022, including an outdoor, eight lane 25m, heated pool with ramp access, a kiosk and amenities with changerooms, showers and toilets, as well as a dedicated PWD facility onsite.
“I like to think we have attracted members because of our quality service, coaching, activities and facilities,” he says.
Off to a flying start
“Our program is delivering quality results.
“We have a real focus on no matter who you are, if you’re in our program we want you to reach your goals.
“Last season we won medals at the state championships and the Brisbane championships and we currently hold first place for points in our Brisbane Premiership Division.
“We have some really, really talented swimmers pushing towards national championships and looking towards Olympic Games trials.”
Plans for stage two of The Lakes College’s aquatic facilities include an indoor heated pool that will be used for learn to swim lessons, more substantial lighting and a shaded grandstand that will seat about 500 spectators, which will add to the club and the college's ability to run carnivals, club nights and other schools’ swimming activities.
Top-notch facilities
“We have access to the college's gymnasium and a multipurpose hall so we don’t have to go offsite – we can offer members of the swim club exactly what they need right here,” Mr Speechley says.
“We also offer free come and try club nights and swim assessments.
“It’s not just about performance, it’s also about participation.”
Mr Speechley says that towards the end of the year, the focus is on club nights, while the beginning of the school year is dedicated to representing the club at various meets.
Personal development
“Attending the meets is not about competing on weekends, it’s about representing the club, giving back to the club which is giving to you – it’s about everybody being involved.
“Being humble is a really big thing for us as a swim club.
"We want our club to be a fun and supportive club where all our swimmers feel a sense of belonging, a club that believes every member matters and that becoming the best swimmer is just as important as becoming the best person they can be."
