TOKYO OLYMPICS: Day 5 action, results

Day 5 Rolling coverage

Three of our local Olympians start their competitions today, including swimmer Kaylee McKeown who is being tipped for a medal and possibly gold. She is one of five 'locals' we'll be following right here. 

Swimming - Kaylee McKeown

8.20pm: Stunning debut swim at the Olympic Games by Redcliffe-born Kaylee McKeown who is the fastest qualifier for the 100m Backstroke semi-finals.

McKeown took an early lead in heat six and was clear of Australian team mate Emily Seebohm at the finish, touching in an Olympic record time of 57.88 seconds.

The former Burpengary Crawl swimmer predicted the 100m and 200m backstroke competitions would be "red hot" and she was right.

McKeown's heat six time beat the Olympic record of 57.96 set by American Regan Smith set seconds earlier in heat five, who in turn lowered the Olympic record of 58.17 set by Canada's Kyle Masse in heat four!

The Aussie medal hope has less than 24 hours to recover as she is back in action tomorrow at 12.50pm in the semi-finals.

Skeet Shooting - Paul Adams

5.30pm: North Lakes shooter Paul Adams finished his first day of action in 15th place after the first three rounds of qualifying for the Skeet Shooting. 

Adams, who works at Kippa-Ring, finished the first two rounds - each of 25 shots - in equal first place, but slipped to 15th in the final round of the day with a score of 73 behind France's Eric Delaunay and America's Vincent Hancock in equal first with perfect scores of 75.

Adams steps up again tomorrow from 11am (AEST) for the final two rounds of qualifying.

The finals in the Men's Skeet Shooting are on from 4.50pm (AEST) tomorrow.

Softball - Chelsea Forkin and Jade Wall

1pm:  Team USA have prevailed in a nail-biting extra inning to beat the Aussie Spirt side 2-1 in the women's softball today.

Tight pitching from Australia's Tarni Stepto and the USA's Monica Abbott kept the score 0-0 for seven innings before the deadlock was broken in the eighth by Australia's Belinda White, with the help of former Redcliffe player Jade Wall, whose unintentional walk saw her score. It was the first run the Americans have conceded in Tokyo so far.

At the bottom of the eighth, US batter Amanda Chidester broke the Aussie's hearts when she took a hit that would bring two of her runners home.

Both teams had bases loaded and chances to score earlier in the match, but could not capitalise due to good fielding and strong pitching. 

The win makes it four from four for the US, who are shaping up to be gold medal favourites.

The Aussies play Mexico tomorrow at 9pm, in a must-win game.  

At the end of the Opening Round of fixtures, the top two nations play for gold and silver, while the third and fourth-placed teams battle for bronze.

Hockey - Renee Taylor

12.30pm: Former Redcliffe Leagues junior Renee Taylor has helped the Hockeyroos to a thrilling 3-1 win against Spain.

Seeking revenge against the Spaniards for their World Cup win in 2018, the Hockeyroos came up trumps in the third quarter of today's opening pool B match.

With both teams goal-less for the first half despite Australia playing three penalty corners, the tide turned 27 seconds into the third quarter, with Taylor helping set up a thrilling goal by Ambrosia Malone.

Just one minute later, the Hockeyroos scored a second goal, courtesy of Emily Chalker.

Spain sought to close the gap just over a minute later, with a goal by Beatriz Perez.

Australia returned fire with just over eight minutes to go in the quarter, with Grace Stewart throwing herself full length to secure the Hockeyroos' third goal.

As with the first two quarters, the fourth was scoreless.

Australia take on China tomorrow at 1.15pm.

Skeet Shooting - Paul Adams

North Lakes shooter Paul Adams is first in action today at 10.30am (AEST) with the opened 75 targets in the Skeet Shooting. The second 50 are tomorrow.

Adams, who works at Kippa-Ring, won his last competition, the Queensland Championships with 120 out of 125, but knows he will have to go higher today.

The 29-year-old theatre nurse scored 118 out of 125 in the Rio Olympics to miss a shootout for the semi-final by three shots.

Adams, pictured above, will follow his grandfather Ian’s shooting advice, which is tattooed on his chest, to take it “one at a time”.

Swimming - Kaylee McKeown

Redcliffe-born Kaylee McKeown launches her Olympic campaign tonight at 8pm (AEST) with the 100m backstroke heats.

McKeown, who trained with Australian Crawl in Burpengary, is one of our biggest hopes for gold after smashing the world record in this event at the recent trials.

The 20-year-old is also in the Olympic 200m backstroke, but has pulled out of the 200m Individual Medley to concentrate of the other two events.

"The 100m backstroke field and the 200m will be red hot," she said before leaving for Tokyo, “all I can say is … it is going to be a very fast final and even the semis.”

Hockey - Renee Taylor

The long wait is over the former Redcliffe Leagues junior Renee Taylor who makes her Olympic debut today against Spain in pool B at 11am (AEST).

Taylor and the Hockeyroos went more than a year without playing matches due to COVID, during which their world ranking dropped from second to fourth.

The Hockeyroos are in Pool A with Argentina, New Zealand, Japan and China. Pool B has Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, Canada, South Africa. The top four from each group go into the knockout quarter-finals.

Taylor reckons the top-ranked Netherlands are “the team to beat” in Tokyo, but added that playing so few matches may give the Hockeyroos an element of surprise.
