Weather warning: Hazardous surf, strong winds

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting rain, strong winds and hazardous surf in the next 48 hours for the southeast coast, including the Moreton Bay Region.

An East Coast Low is expected to form off the coast east of K'gari (Fraser Island) later today, and gradually move southwards while deepening during Friday.

It will interact with a ridge to the south to produce increasing winds and waves along the southern coastline. The low will begin to move away to the southeast on Saturday.

The bureau has issued a Hazardous Surf Warning with locations including Bribie Island likely to be affected.

People are being urged to stay out of the water and away from surf-exposed areas. They should also check their properties regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if necessary raise goods and electrical items.

There is also a Strong Wind Warning for Moreton Bay.

The weather bureau is forecasting 10-25mm today and up to 50mm in some parts of the region tomorrow.
