15,000 buns and counting, Moreton Bay is closing in on state bun crown

A Moreton Bay supermarket is proving to be one of Queensland’s hot cross bun capitals for Coles as we approach Easter.

Coles’ Caboolture Big Fish had, at the time of writing, the second highest sales of hot cross buns in the state, with more than 15,000 buns sold.

The Big Fish supermarket trails only Coles Carindale, which has sold more than 15,500 buns, with Coles Thornlands in third on 15,000.

Coles expects to sell more than 8.5 million buns in Queensland - of 55 million across Australia - since Boxing Day, securing third place nationally.

New South Wales leads the current sales with 10 million buns, followed by Victoria with 9 million, Queensland 8.5 million, West Australia 5 million, South Australia 3 million, Tasmania one million, ACT 650,000 and Northern territory 300,000.

Now, 32 per cent of Coles customers are now choosing the microwave as a preferred way to eat hot cross buns, compared with 29 per cent for the toaster.

When it comes to flavour, Australians are sticking with tradition. Forty per cent of customers continue to choose fruit hot cross buns.

Coles General Manager for Bakery, Dairy and Frozen, Brad Gorman, said hot cross buns remain one of the most anticipated Easter traditions.

“Hot cross buns are a simple Easter ritual Australians look forward to each year, and our data shows there’s no single way to enjoy them, whether warmed in the microwave, toasted, or eaten straight from the pack,” he said.

“Our bakery team spends months developing the range, and planning for new flavours starts more than a year in advance.”
