Birthday snapper tops off early-morning fishing trip at Scotts Point

Ten-year-old Kai is a “mad mad fisherman” according to his dad Ben, and his birthday fishing trip delivered a catch he has never landed before.

Kai and Ben spent the early morning of Sunday, 1 February, fishing off the rocks at Scotts Point in Redcliffe to celebrate Kai’s 10th birthday.

After more than three hours of patiently fishing with minimal bites, Kai hooked into something much bigger than expected and landed a 76-centimetre snapper.

“Kai has never caught anything this big,” Ben said.

Ben said Kai often enters fishing competitions but is yet to take home a win.

Kai is also hoping to start his own catch-and-cook channel, and the birthday snapper became a full catch-and-cook moment after the session. Kai gutted and scaled the fish, then cooked it and ate it.

Ben said he was also hoping to one day take Kai charter fishing.

“Hopefully one day we can afford to take him on a charter,” he said.
