A Caboolture man is among those charged following a major police investigation into alleged hooning activity on the Gateway Bridge on New Year’s Eve.

Police say the investigation was launched after reports that several vehicles blocked northbound lanes of the Gateway Motorway at Murarrie just before midnight on 31 December, with vehicles allegedly performing burnouts and fireworks being set off.

As part of the investigation, 13 vehicles were seized across South East Queensland, including during searches at properties in Caboolture and surrounding areas.

  • Three counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle involving the publishing of material on social media

  • Two counts of unlawful conduct relating to participation in hooning group activity

  • One count each of driving an unregistered vehicle, driving uninsured, using a cancelled number plate and possessing tainted property

He is due to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on 27 January.

Operation across South East Queensland

Police charged six people with a total of 40 offences as part of the operation, with a further two people issued traffic infringement notices.

Search warrants were executed at multiple locations across the region, including Caboolture, Alexandra Hills, Daisy Hill, Logan Village and Waterford West.

Police say three of the seized vehicles were allegedly stolen and located during the execution of search warrants.

Police warning on hooning

North Brisbane District Detective Acting Inspector Sean Webster said police would continue to take strong action against dangerous driving behaviour.

“Police will not tolerate driving dangerous acts of this nature,” he said.

“Those who engage in hooning risk serious consequences, including fines, vehicle impoundment and potential imprisonment.”

Investigations into the New Year’s Eve incident remain ongoing.
