The $81 million upgrade of Caboolture River Road in Morayfield is a step closer, with construction expected to start in the first half of 2027.
City of Moreton Bay councillors have unanimously voted to proceed with awarding a contract for the long-awaited project, which will see a 1.2km section between Morayfield Road and Grant Road widened from two lanes to four.
Council's CEO will now finalise negotiations with the preferred contractor, whose name is yet to be announced.
The upgrade will provide two traffic lanes in each direction, a central median, additional turning lanes and new cycling and pedestrian paths on both sides of the road.
It will also include new traffic lights at the intersection of Amy and Kenneth Streets, upgrades to existing signals at Morayfield Road and Grant Road, and changes to access at Ben Street and Lorebury Drive, which will become left in, left out only.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the improvements were needed to meet growing demand on one of the city's key east-west connections.
“This long-awaited boost to one of Moreton Bay’s key east-west road connections cannot come quick enough for the thousands of locals that rely on it every day,” he said.
“The one thing that hasn’t changed is the road itself – with its two lanes struggling to meet the daily requirements of residents and businesses, especially during peak hours.”
Preparations are already under way along the corridor, with electricity, telecommunications, water and sewer infrastructure being relocated to make room for the wider road.
Division 3 Councillor Adam Hain said some of the work had been completed, while water and sewer services would continue to be relocated in stages until early 2027.
“Our goal has been to get the corridor ready ahead of the road construction phase, so the project can be delivered safely and as efficiently as possible,” Cr Hain said.
“It’s a big project in a busy and challenging setting.”
The Queensland Government is contributing $71 million towards the upgrade, with City of Moreton Bay providing $10 million under the Growth Area Compact, part of the South East Queensland City Deal.
The improvements are expected to be open and operating in 2028.
