There have been four new cases of COVID-19 detected in Queensland in the past 24 hours, of which two are the result of community transmission. There are a number of possible exposure sites in the Moreton Bay Region.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says one case is a close contact of someone connected with the Portuguese restaurant cluster and the other works at a Qatar Airways check-in counter at the International Airport.
The woman in her 30s has been to a number of venues in the Moreton Bay Region including Officeworks at North Lakes (June 25), Coles at Murrumba Downs (June 26), Anytime Fitness at Griffin (dates and times not available yet), and with colleagues at Menzies Aviation on June 26 and 28.
The other person has been in hotel quarantine for their entire infectious period.
The other two cases are overseas travellers in hotel quarantine. There are now 43 active cases in Queensland.
At this stage, there is no word on whether lockdown will be lifted as planned at 6pm tomorrow, but the Premier is encouraged by today’s numbers.
Almost 30,000 people have been tested for COVID-19 and more than 18,000 vaccinated in the past 24 hours.
Ms Palaszczuk says with so many people tested, and low numbers of community transmission, she is "very encouraged" by the situation.
"We're not out of the woods yet. We still have 24 hours to go to see what happens and we'll update you tomorrow whether we can lift the lockdown," she says.
Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young is also encouraged by today's numbers.
"I'm the most encouraged I've been with the amount of testing ... I really and truly thank every person who's come forward for testing," she says.
"Our new case did come forward early and got tested."
The woman, who works at the check-in counter at Brisbane International Airport had been exposed to travellers and crew, who fly in and out and are hard to monitor.
Dr Young says this is why it is mandatory and vital that everyone wears a mask at the domestic and international airports.
"We don't know who might be infectious as we're walking around that airport," she says.
The woman started showing symptoms on June 27 but has been infectious since last Friday. Contact tracers are working with her to determine where she has been and identify additional exposure sites.
There is one other person who lives in her household and that person is being tested, as are other close contacts.
Investigation starts
Health and Ambulance Services Minister Yvette D'Ath says an investigation will start immediately into the exposure of an unvaccinated clerical worker to COVID-19 at Prince Charles Hospital.
Letters have also been sent to the five hospitals that manage COVID-19 patients to reassess the risk posed to all workers at those facilities as the Delta variant tests current processes.
She is keen to see compulsory vaccinations expanded to the entire workforce at those facilities including kitchen, laundry and pathology staff.
"I want to have a much broader look and much broader definition of who are 1A workers, who are potentially at risk," she says.
Do the right thing
Deputy Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said police were seeing “very good compliance” from the community during the lockdown, with a few exceptions.
One of those was a 49-year-old woman at Morayfield who was fined after refusing to wear a mask.
He is also critical of people who flocked to beaches yesterday in large numbers, many were not wearing masks.
Police will be patrolling beaches today and will work with councils to install barricades, if people do not do the right thing.
They are permitted to visit the beach in their local area for exercise only, not to get a sun tan.
Lockdown – what you need to know
Lockdown started at 6pm Tuesday and will run until 6pm on Friday, with the situation to be reviewed on Friday morning. It applies to 11 local government areas (LGAs) in South East Queensland, Townsville, Magnetic Island and Palm Island.
Health Minister Yvette D’Ath says people can only leave their homes for four reasons. They are:
- Essential education and work that can’t be done at home.
- Health care, including vaccination
- Essential shopping and care of a vulnerable family member
- Exercise with one person (not from your family) outdoors
Gyms, cinemas, entertainment venues and places of worship are closed.
Only 20 people are permitted at funerals, 10 at weddings (with no singing or dancing). No more than two people are permitted to visit your home.
If you left one of the 11 local government areas locked down before 6pm Tuesday, you must abide by these restrictions even if you’re outside the lockdown area.
Restaurants and cafes can offer takeaway and home delivery only.
