COVID-19 update: Three-day lockdown ordered
Words by Kylie Knight

Queensland will go into lockdown for three days from 6pm tonight, after four new cases of COVID-19 were detected in the past 24 hours. Two of these are the result of community transmission.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young have just updated the Queensland Community.

The two cases of community transmission are a miner in Ipswich linked to the Northern Territory mine outbreak, who is isolating and considered low risk, and the other is a casual clerical worker who works on reception outside the COVID ward at Prince Charles Hospital.

The woman, aged 19, lives at Sandgate and has been to Townsville and Magnetic Island. She has also been to the Woolworths at Sandgate and a gym. She was not vaccinated and the Premier says there will be a full investigation to find out why. At this stage, it is unclear which variant she has, but more information is likely later today.

One of her close friends and two of her family members are sick and are being tested. There are four people in her household.
Dr Jeannette Young says she is concerned about outbreaks on four fronts – the miners linked to the NT mine (Delta strain), the Virgin flight crew member and the five flights possibly exposed, the Portuguese restaurant cluster and the latest case of a Prince Charles Hospital administration worker.

The administration worker started to show symptoms last Monday and has been infectious since June 19. On Sunday, June 20, she went to Woolworths at Sandgate (9.30-10.30am) and Bay Health Gym (10-noon).

She worked at Prince Charles Hospital on Tuesday and Wednesday last week and travelled on VA369 from Brisbane to Townsville on Thursday, June 24, and was at Brisbane Airport for about an hour before her flight.

She and her family group then travelled to Magnetic Island and back to Townsville and then travelled on VA387 to Brisbane.

Lockdown – what you need to know

Lockdown will run from 6pm today to 6pm on Friday, with the situation to be reviewed on Friday morning. It applies to 11 local government areas (LGAs) in South East Queensland, Townsville, Magnetic Island and Palm Island.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath says people can only leave their homes for four reasons. They are:

  • Essential education and work that can’t be done at home.
  • Health care, including vaccination
  • Essential shopping and care of a vulnerable family member
  • Exercise with one person (not from your family) outdoors

Gyms, cinemas, entertainment venues and places of worship will close.

Only 20 people are permitted at funerals, 10 at weddings (with no singing or dancing). No more than two people are permitted to visit your home.

If you leave one of the 11 LGAs before 6pm, you must abide by these restrictions even if you’re outside the lockdown area.

Restaurants and cafes can offer takeaway and home delivery only.

Ms D’Ath says the administration worker has been infectious in the community for 10 days and she urges anyone who is feeling unwell to be tested.

She says testing capacity will be boosted, and pop-up clinics deployed if needed.

Ms D’Ath says Queenslanders need to be vigilant, maintaining social distancing, hand hygiene and mask wearing.

"We must work hard and fast to trace and contain," she says.

Travel restrictions will apply to people coming to Queensland from newly-declared hotspot locations in Western Australia and the Northern Territory from 1am tomorrow.

Exposure sites

If you have been to any of the following venues at the times specified, contact Queensland Health, get tested and isolate immediately. Monitor the Queensland Health website for the growing number of possible exposure sites. We will update this list as more come to hand.

Call to stop international arrivals

Premier Palaszczuk is urging Prime Minister Scott Morrison to stop unnecessary international arrivals and take all arrivals to the Howard Springs quarantine facility.

It is a call supported by Deputy Premier Steven Miles who says people in regional Queensland have now potentially been exposed as a result of international arrivals and breaches in quarantine.

"International borders are supposed to be closed but every week thousands of people are allowed to travel," he says.

Almost 200 are expected to arrive in Queensland today.
