COVID-19 UPDATE: October 1

There have been three new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, two locally-acquired and one in hotel quarantine. The Premier says it is good news, but we need to remain on high alert and continue to adhere to stage two restrictions.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Chief Health Officer Jeanette Young have provided an update this morning.

One case is linked to the ‘aviation cluster’ and has spent four days on the Gold Coast. The other case has only been infectious in the community for one day.

Ms Palaszczuk says the other good news is more than 19,000 people have been tested in the past 24 hours.

“This gives us an added layer of confidence at this stage,” she says.

“We want to see continual high rates of testing to make sure we don’t have any community transmission.”

She says at this stage there is no ‘seeding’ in the community or unlinked cases, if that changes she has no doubt Dr Young will call for a lockdown.

"If the advice is to go into lockdown, we will go into lockdown. There's no ifs and buts here people, this is serious. It will depend on if we see any community transmission over the next 24-48 hours," she says.

It comes as several locations at North Lakes were added to Queensland Health’s list of possible exposure sites last night, including a number of shops at Westfield North Lakes and Peninsula Fair shopping centres.

In addition to these locations, North Lakes Sports Club has informed its members that an infected person was at the club on September 25 from 1-3.30pm. The club closed for deep cleaning last night but was expected to reopen this morning at 10am.

Dr Young says one of the new cases was at the Gold Coast on September 29, to collect an animal. She does not believe this case is a risk to the community.

The other new case is part of the ‘aviation cluster’ as was likely infected between September 20 and 24. He travelled to the Gold Coast with his family on September 25 and spent four days at Kirra with his family.

A number of new exposure sites in the area will be added to Queensland Health's list today.

Dr Young thanked the high number of people who came forward for testing yesterday and is calling on people to continue doing so if they have any symptoms.

She is also calling on people who have not yet been vaccinated to do so today, even if they have an appointment for a later date.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath says it has been three days since these new clusters started appearing, so it is good news there has not been any community transmission as a result. Those who have been infected are direct contacts.

Ms D’Ath says she wants to keep it that way and is encouraging people to get tested if they have symptoms, use the check-in app, wear their masks and get vaccinated.

She is even encouraging families travelling across Queensland to get vaccinated while they are on holidays.

“The quicker you can get vaccinated, the quicker we can protect the community,” she says.

She says the difference in this outbreak is authorities know where all cases have originated and there has been a 20 per cent increase in the number of people fully vaccinated.
