Petrie Police have reunited World War II medals with their rightful owners after considerable help from the public.

The medals were awarded initially to Clarence James Jones posthumously after his death as a prisoner of war in World War II.

They had then been passed down as a family heirloom to his grandson, Robert MacCallum.

The medals were allegedly lost years earlier, until recently located during a search of a Strathpine property in relation to another matter.

Following an appeal for information, Petrie officers were inundated with reports from the public and were able to get in touch with Clarence’s family.

Mr MacCallum and his cousin Kathleen went to Petrie Station on Thursday to thank officers for locating and returning the medals.

A 22-year-old Kippa Ring man has been charged with unlawful possession of suspected stolen property.

He is due to reappear in Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on January 13.
