A petition calling for “safety, cleanliness and accessibility” in Redcliffe’s public places, has collected hundreds of signatures within days of launching.
The petition - Redcliffe Deserves Better on change.org - had, at the time of writing, 408 signatories which, it says, will be added to an in-person petition.
While recognising the need to help the homeless, the petition claims Redcliffe’s beaches, parks, showgrounds and grassed areas are “facing serious and ongoing issues impacting the entire community”.
Issues include rubbish, food, debris, broken glass, hazardous materials, drug paraphernalia, abandoned trolleys, occupied parking areas, verbal aggression and anti-social behaviour.
It follows Council and the State Government moves to help those living rough by Redcliffe Tennis Centre and Council escalating its campaign for more support to tackle the housing and homelessness crisis.
“We acknowledge homelessness is a complex issue and requires compassionate, long-term solutions,” the petition says, “however, public spaces must remain safe, clean and accessible for everyone.
“Particularly for the broader community who rely on and contribute to the upkeep of these areas through rates, taxes and active participation in the community.”
The petition calls on the City of Moreton Bay, State Minister for Housing, State Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley, Police and “all decision-makers to “restore the safety, cleanliness and accessibility of our public spaces”.
Comments on the petition include this from Mary: “Understand everyone needs a place to sleep, however what is happening on our peninsula is unfair to rate payers.
“Cannot use some areas of parks and foreshore as it is not safe. Residents would likely be more understanding if some sites weren’t so filthy and untidy.”
Karen wrote: “Something needs to be done immediately. Been going on for years. We all deserve a safe and healthy environment to live in.”
