Deception Bay is to host the first ever Gateball Challenge this month.

The ‘challenge’ is to hit a single ball four metres through a hoop in one shot. If successful, you will be registered as part of the record attempt.

Shots will be available for: $1 – one shot; $2 – three shots; $7 – five shots; $10 – 20 shots, with a free tutorial as well.

The ‘Challenge’ will be at Deception Bay Bowls Club, Bayview Tce, on Sunday November 28, from noon-5pm and is open to everyone.

Sausage sizzle

There will be a free sausage sizzle and some free drinks on the day.

Organised by the Australian Gateball Union (AGU), aims to raise awareness, interest and playing numbers – as well as to set a record.

Geoff Morris, President of the AGU, hoped the challenge would “encourage people to get out in their community and see different opportunities available to them”.

The sport is similar to croquet, using a mallet, balls and hoops. It is non-contact, strategic and can be played by anyone.

Local clubs

There are clubs at Deception Bay (Moreton Bay Gateball Club), Redcliffe, Ipswich, the Gold Coast and in Perth.

The sport originated in Japan after World War II and was introduced to Australia by the visiting Japan Sports Club Society in 1986.

Valentine’s Day 1989 saw the first recorded game of Gateball in this country and by 1998 it was well established in New South Wales and Victoria.

The first Australian Gateball Championships were held the following year and Australia has sent teams to the world championships since 2004.
