Matilda Jr to hit school stage
Published 6:00am 2 October 2023
Southern Cross Catholic College students have been busy rehearsing for their upcoming musical, which will be performed in four big shows.
The cast has been rehearsing every Friday and Sunday afternoon since July for five hours each week to prepare for Roald Dahl’s Matilda Jr.
Director Vanessa Hall says it’s amazing to see the students work together to create the best production possible.
“With the guidance of our teachers, students learn the music, choreography and blocking for the songs and then help each other to rehearse,” Vanessa says.
“It has been amazing to see the connection and sense of community that has built between the students as they’ve sought to live our school motto ‘We seek the light, and then we shine.’”
Matilda Jr is a high-energy production based on the beloved book by Roald Dahl, and audiences can expect to see students' talents shine on stage.
“The production showcases the vocal, dance and acting talents of our young performers. Following the story line of the famous and much-loved Roald Dahl story, Matilda Jr reminds the audience that 'even if you’re little you can do a lot' and with the help of your friends, you can stand up for yourself when things aren’t right,” Vanessa says.
“Audiences will be entertained by the Tim Minchin songs made famous recently in the Netflix film Matilda, such as Naughty, When I Grow Up and Revolting Children.”
This year’s production is particularly special since Matilda Jr will be the school’s second musical production in 12 years; with its first being Disney’s Moana Jr last year.
“Last year as a college, we performed Moana Jr, which was our first musical in more than 12 years. After the success of Moana Jr, our students were keen to get back on stage to develop their skills and share their love of musical theatre with the community again,” Vanessa explains.
“With the support of our college principal and leadership team, we have been able to bring this new story to life on stage.”
Southern Cross Catholic College’s production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda Jr will be held on Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15 in the Brother Timothy Peter Centre at 299 Scarborough Rd, Scarborough.
An afternoon show will be held from 2-3.30pm, followed by an evening show from 6-7.30pm.
Tickets are available here.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students, children and seniors. A family ticket for two adults and two children is $60.
