Neami Safe Space Strathpine is open to people experiencing emotional distress throughout the Christmas period.

It is an alternative to emergency departments for people experiencing distress or suicidal crises, providing a welcoming, walk-in and inclusive environment for anyone.

Neami Safe Space Strathpine Peer Practice Leader Vin Borg says the service is “peer-led by staff who have their own lived experience of suicide or distress, supported by an on-site clinician”.

“Safe Space is open evenings and weekends when other services may not be available. Guests have choice and control over the support they receive, they can access support making sense of their distress, problem solving, creating safety plans and they can be connected with local services and resources as needed.

“Guests can receive a follow up call the next day if they wish.”

The Strathpine Safe Space is operated by Neami National and funded by the Brisbane North PHN. Support from Safe Space is free for guests.

“Safe Spaces were created in response to growing mental health emergency department presentations and recognition that this environment is not designed for people experiencing crisis,” Vin says.

“There is a need for alternatives. Brisbane North PHN also funds three additional Safe Space services in Bardon, Caboolture and Redcliffe.

“The service provides a supportive environment tailored to assisting all people, helping reduce feelings of distress and offering an alternative to visiting an emergency department. Our team of peer workers provide non-judgemental support to help people stay safe.

“Early findings from an independent evaluation of Safe Spaces indicate that services are saving lives and that the unique approach has led to sustained improvement in the quality of life for guests. Notably, 86 per cent of guests reported reduced distress after their visit.”

Vin says the service supports 250-300 people each month and Brisbane North Safe Spaces have prevented nearly 900 emergency department admissions and subsequent hospitalisations.

“This has saved $7.5 million in healthcare-related costs, with a fivefold return on investment for every dollar funded.”

Safe Space Strathpine is at Unit 6, 327 Gympie Rd, Strathpine. It is open 5-9pm on weekdays and 3-7pm on weekends.

The team can connect those seeking support with other local services if needed.

Access is simple: Either phone 07 3493 6710 or visit in-person during operating hours.

The service is free, does not require an appointment or referral, and is open to anyone, regardless of citizenship status.
