“No problem” with motorsport park extension

Community consultation for the proposed Moreton Motorsport Park may be extended, says Queensland’s Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie.

Mr Bleijie said today he is considering a request from State Member for Pumicestone Ariana Doolan to extend the consultation period.

“If that’s what the local community wants, I’ve got no problem extending that,” he said.

Plans for the $20 million Moreton Motorsport Park on land at Beachmere, is going through the Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) process.

It is proposed to build two tracks hosting motocross and speedway meetings, driver training facilities, a BMX track, pitting and grandstand seating on 24.8 hectares off Bloesch Rd.

Deputy Premier Bleijie will make the final decision on the development application.

“I’m not going to offer a view because ultimately it has to be determined through the MID, but I do note there is some community concern about it,” he said today.

“There has been a residents’ meeting, so I’m weighing that up at the moment and we are in a public consultation phase.

“I’m very keen to hear what the community wants and wishes - and very keen to hear about the concerns of the community.

“We’ll listen to the community, get feedback from the community and then my department will look at all that feedback and bring recommendations up to me.”

It follows a heated public meeting in Beachmere on Monday when the Corbet Group met residents to discuss the proposal and impacts.

All seating and standing room inside the Beachmere Hub was taken, forcing many to watch and listened from outside.

Opponents, at times, talked over and shouted down speakers - and supporters - with key concerns being traffic, flooding, noise, property values, wildlife and the submissions process.

Andrew Corbet, General Manager of The Corbet Group, was “a bit surprised” by the mood of the meeting but felt the “vast majority were pretty good and open to listening”.
