Pavilion plan takes major step forward

The new Suttons Beach Pavilion has taken another significant step closer to reality - while a loved landmark set to be relocated.

City of Moreton Bay has lodged a development application for the pavilion with construction expected to start mid-2025.

It replaces the 86-year-old former pavilion which was demolished on safety grounds.

However, the rotunda, which stood in front of the old pavilion, is to be retained and moved along the foreshore.

Mayor Peter Flannery said of the new pavilion: “It’s going to be a striking building that befits its coastal location.

“I'm also delighted to announce Council is providing $7.4 million to add to the $12.1 million approved through the SEQ Liveability Fund.

“I am impressed how designers have catered to the climate with a range of comfortable shelters, shade, open spaces, wind and rain protection and ample airflow.

“We’ve been working closely with the architects to conduct thorough detailed sun and weather studies, ensuring a robust material selection and optimising the building for shade during summer, and natural light for winter.

“Through this process, we’ve refined parts of the building design by incorporating multiple shade awnings over the ground floor outdoor dining areas, extending the fringe overhang above the circular gathering space to increase the shaded seating areas.

“We’ve also looked to incorporate vertically stacked bricks and tiles, add more sweeping curves to the flat rooftop, and update the fringe to a golden champagne anodized aluminium material, giving the pavilion design a balance between strong lines and curved features.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie said the project reinforced Queensland's status as an investment destination.

“Along with boosting employment, economic development, and tourism in the City of Moreton Bay, this revitalised site will breathe new life into one of South East Queensland’s most popular seaside precincts,” he said.

"We are proud the SEQ Liveability Fund is supporting exciting projects like the Suttons Beach Pavilion redevelopment to deliver generational infrastructure to benefit Queenslanders for decades to come.”

Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) said: “It’s a space the community can enjoy for generations to come.

“I’m pleased visitors will be able to continue to enjoy the 1998 rotunda which will be relocated along Suttons Beach foreshore and provide additional shaded seating.

The new Pavilion design will have indoor dining and outdoor dining with three hospitality spaces, a Changing Places facility, rooftop space and public viewing deck.
